The Choose Love Month of Courage Challenge #4 is to read a book about courage. Books can model important lessons in facing fears, overcoming obstacles or even changing the world. Through reading stories about resiliency, determination, and inner-strength, kids can learn the tools they will need to make difficult choices, overcome obstacles, or even make everyday decisions.

Read stories about courage or ask kids to identify brave acts in any story. Talk about why the characters are brave and ask some questions. Are there obvious acts of courage? What are some subtle acts of courage? How do the characters change? Would they make that choice? What would they do?

It’s important to discuss books about courage because when kids feel brave, they are able to learn new skills, develop high self-esteem, embrace different experiences and opportunities and show that their fears may not always be as scary as they seem.

Here’s a few ideas to start reading:

Elementary level books:

Dog Man by Dav Pilkey

Horton Hears a Who by Dr. Suess
