Week Two of ’30 Days of Gratitude’
Day 8 – Gratitude with purpose
Life is all about the relationships we create with others. The Choose Love Formula cultivates kindness, compassion, and connection. Love is the universal need that unites all human beings and it’s so important to have healthy relationships and deep, meaningful connections with others.
When was the last time you went out of your way to help someone or make them feel good? Put yourself aside for a moment and consider how you can help someone else today. It doesn’t take much to have a positive impact. Make a list of all the ways you can reach out, and, today, put one of them in action. Keep the list handy as a reminder to do good deeds often. Everyone will benefit from your kindness.
Day 9 Be Grateful for the Small Things
“I don’t have to take a trip around the world or be on a yacht in the Mediterranean to have happiness. I can find it in the little things, like looking out into my backyard and seeing deer in the fields.” – Queen Latifah.
Take today to remind yourself of the small, yet special moments in your life. From a baby’s smile, your morning cup of coffee, or a brilliant sunset, to hearing your favorite childhood song, seeing a beautiful flower, or drinking a refreshing glass of clean water, we need to be mindful of what we have in our lives. Even the smallest thing can leave a big impression.
It’s the month of Thanksgiving and we need to be mindful of all that we have. Press the pause button often to reflect and give thanks for your blessings. Our programs teach about the importance of being grateful for family, friends, school, and everything else. Know that you have goodness surrounding you.
Today, Scarlett will be presenting at Bentonville, Arkansas at its HUGE Choose Love Community celebration to honor Jesse. The Walmart museum, the school district, and the entire town is taking part. There will be a Fall Festival with marching bands, games, and lots of fun.

Day 10 Gratitude in the Moment
The busy-ness of our lives tends to fill our days with stress and anxiety. We can get wrapped up in other things that we rarely take a breath to slow down. Step back and ask yourself: “What am I grateful for in this very moment?” Take time to reflect for five minutes. Don’t think about anything but the here and now. Let your mind settle on what’s important to you. Sometimes we need a gentle reminder to consider the blessings we have and what we should cherish. What are you grateful for right here, right now?
By following the principles of the Choose Love formula, you will learn that gratitude is mindful thankfulness and the ability to be thankful even when things in life are challenging. By being ever-present, you’ll feel connected to those around you, you’ll be more self-aware, and you’ll find that you’ll appreciate the gifts in your life.
Day 11 Celebrate Veteran’s Day
Today is a special holiday to be grateful to the troops serving now as well as family members and friends who have served in the past. Is there a Veteran in your family? Have a conversation with the veteran and learn about their military service and what it means to them. Let them know how you respect them and honor their commitment to their country.
These veterans served with bravery and courage, uniting with their fellow man, and showing dedication to a cause. We can learn from them how to be strong, resilient, and mighty. These men and women reflect the first character value in our Choose Love formula: Courage to overcome obstacles and stand tall in any circumstance.

Day 12 Taking time to Relax
The mind-body connection is the key to overall good health. What do you like to do to unwind and find balance? Be more self-aware and recognize that you need to nurture your own self. Love yourself every day by taking time for self-care – the best kind of remedy to restore your energy and your overall mental and physical health.
Our partner, @ZensationalKids, combines the tools of yoga and mindfulness into our Choose Love curriculum which explores breath, movement and mindfulness. Research is demonstrating how these specific tools help the nervous system relax, organize and process information, which is not only essential for learning, but also living healthy, happy lives. Yoga and mindfulness have been found to be highly effective practices to help self-regulate, manage big emotions, focus attention, and develop resilience.

Day 13 Passage of Time
”In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.” – Abraham Lincoln
Time passes by so quickly and we need to stop and re-evaluate how we’ve been living our lives, how we feel about ourselves, and how we’ve been treating others. Ask yourself: what is different today than a year ago that I am grateful for?
We need to be the best person we can be and live life following the Choose Love formula: Courage + Gratitude + Forgiveness + Compassion in Action. The Choose Love programs teach the foundational concepts and skills of social and emotional learning (SEL), and is informed by current brain research and neuroscience. SEL provides tremendous lifelong mental, physical, and emotional benefits. It’s a powerful and proactive mental health initiative that helps us thrive and always choose love.
Day 14 Recognize a Senior Citizen
Senior citizens are a vital part of our fabric of life. They can impart wisdom and have interesting stories to tell of yesteryear. Take a moment to connect with them by calling or writing to the elders in your family, a neighbor, or someone in your community, or volunteer your time at a senior center.
Adopt the Choose Love principles to your relationship with the elderly by showing them how much you appreciate them and see them as a valuable part of your community. Let them know they belong and you love them. As Scarlett says, “In actuality, we are all exactly the same. We need love. We want to belong. We want to feel good. We want to feel happy.” Always Choose love and love one another.

Day 3: Be Grateful for the Universe
The Universe is filled with the beauty of twinkling stars, billowing clouds, and the vastness of the sky. Put down your technology, take a deep breath, and gaze up at the world before you. Lose yourself in its peacefulness as you experience this precious moment in time.
Be inspired by David Romanelli who encourages you to “trust the Universe” as you listen to his podcast, “Ancient Secret to Healing Anxiety.”
Day 4: Be Grateful for Being You
Today, celebrate and love the person you are.
In her song, “Born This Way,” @LadyGaga celebrates everyone’s unique self. Have the courage to stand tall, be brave, and honor who and what you are. We partnered with Lady Gaga’s @BornThisWayFoundation to share the message of creating a better world and finding your strength by being YOU. Follow the Choose Love formula and be empowered by your resilience, your positive attitude, and your self-awareness. We are ALL special and we all have the power to Choose Love.
Day 5: Find your Motivation
“Gratitude is the great mind shifter. You can’t have two thoughts at once so you can choose a grateful thought to replace a lower energy one.” – Scarlett Lewis
Scarlett’s words are always so thought-provoking. Contemplate what she says here and find a gratitude quote that speaks to you in some way and really makes you think about how you feel and how you act toward others.
Neuroscience has shown that feeling grateful has a positive impact on our mental health and well-being. It increases our happiness, helps us to better deal with stress and anxiety, manage emotions, gives us greater self-esteem, strengthens our social and emotional learning, and so much more.
What is your motivation? Post it at #Gratitude #ChooseLove so you can inspire others by your words.
Day 6 – Healthy Body
Thank your body. Even when something is wrong, there’s plenty that is still right. Being thankful for being alive is the single most important way to find gratitude during the hardest day. What is working well on your body today?
If you have pain and stress in your body, try tapping as a way to destress. Tapping is a self-regulating tool to develop an understanding of your emotions and resiliency. Watch the video from our partner, the @TappingSolution with Nick Ortner.
“Even though I have pain and stress in my body, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”
Day 7 – Healthy Grieving for a Lost Loved One
Holidays can be hard for those who have lost loved ones. There is nothing in life that can really prepare us for the death of a loved one. Whether the death is sudden or as a result of a long term illness, it always catches us off-guard. We believe that we can help to change the experience of grief and loss, into a journey of hope and transformation because as Dianne says, “Grieving well is by choice. Choice is the most powerful tool we have.”
Choose Love and Healthy Grieving offers separate guides for children, teens, and adults to follow, where you can learn about the grieving process for each age group respectively. We have included tips and tricks you can use to approach and assist someone who is grieving, or for you to use to help in your own grieving journey. It will take time, but you CAN heal – let us help.
Visit our Extension Programs to find Healthy Grieving and download the guide that best suits your needs now and start healing.
